Painting the harbour

It’s a windy day at this harbour today

Wow what a difference adding paint and varnish makes to the harbour scene. It gives a more realistic appearance. I used techniques shown in a harbour video tutorial found in the link below. Lots of great videos here.

PVA and toilet paper make great looking waves
Now for some shaded painting with careful selection of colours
Now to add the wave foam

Railway level crossing – DIY

Finished Level Crossing, looks and operates very nicely (should have made the vertical pole smaller in diameter)
Firstly worked out positioning of LED’s soldered shorter legs together (Check arduino sketch for either + or -)
Using a breadboard, sensors and LED’s organized ArduinoCode
Construct brass pole, note filed notch for wire access
Wires brought out and top piece notched for wire access

I used old cat 5 cable wire for fine wires
I used large pop rivets cut off and drilled out for covers around lights
I soldered the LED wire that was joined to the brass pipe and passed the other 2 wires through pipe to solder the Other LED leg
Short leg soldered to brass pipe. Note white heat shrink to protect other LED leg touching brass pipe.
Wires soldered and excess pushed back into brass pipe
Top brass section carefully soldered into position
Pop rivets painted black and glued in position. Everything painted
Nice little shed to hid optical sensor used to turn on crossing lights

Adding a background image makes a difference.

I have been working on creating a scene highlighting sugar cane. I have been happy with the model the sugar cane using paint brush bristles (stained green) and hand positioned and glued in rows. I used brown corduroy to detail the rows and give an even location to glue the bristles. The brown corduroy gives a nice look for the bare earth. I used static grass for the young sugar cane. All that remains is to the glue the sugar cane section in position and disguise the plywood edge. I have just added a colour picture of Tully Sugar Mill in full swing. This adds an extra level of detail to the effect and now I can see that I need to put some more detail into the foreground cane and ground.

Creating a small lake

Using a piece of clear acrylic sheet to create a nice looking small lake. Firstly I scribed and shaped a piece of thin cardboard to fit the area of the lake. Which I used to glue to the acrylic sheet and cut out on my band saw. With a bit of careful sanding and filing I achieved a very good fit and result. All that was required was to paint the underside of the acrylic sheet. I used 3 different colours, one black one tan and the other light blue. These were sprayed in different spaces on the clear areas of the acrylic. After drying the protective layer was removed to show the result. Now all that is needed is to glue down and fill in to the level of the water. I do intend to have some water trickling down into the lake from out to the right once I work out he best way to achieve this.
